I keep seeing the same frustrating pattern: one person says a VPN is flawless in Shanghai, another cannot connect in Beijing, and a third says it worked yesterday but not this morning. That does not always mean somebody is lying. China VPN performance can change with the local internet provider, the Wi-Fi network, the device, the route out of the country, and temporary blocking.
So the useful question is not simply “does this VPN work in China?” It is “does it work on the networks and devices I will actually use, and what happens when the first route stops working?”
Before you travel, prepare for the boring failure
The worst time to discover that you cannot reach a VPN website is after you need the installer. Set up the account and app before travel. Save an offline copy of the Android APK or Windows installer somewhere you can still reach, and write down the support contact separately.
Open the app at least once. Check whether Android asks for VPN permission, whether Windows needs administrator access, and whether your account has a device limit. These are small details at home and very annoying details when you are tired, jet-lagged, and trying to get online.
A five-part test that tells you something useful
- Test both Wi-Fi and mobile data. A connection that works on one may fail on the other. Switch networks, wait for the device to settle, and reconnect.
- Test the services you need. Open a normal website, send a message, make a short call, and sign in to a school or work service. A speed-test page alone is not enough.
- Leave it connected for a while. A VPN that connects for thirty seconds and drops after twenty minutes is not ready for everyday use.
- Lock the phone or minimize the app. On Android, confirm the VPN remains active in the background. On Windows, confirm it survives being minimized.
- Disconnect deliberately. Make sure ordinary internet access returns cleanly. A broken disconnect flow is just as troublesome as a failed connection.
Why “connected” can still mean “not working”
A VPN app can show a green button while DNS is broken, the selected route cannot reach the service you need, or all useful traffic has stalled. Check the result, not just the button. If ordinary browsing, DNS, and one real app all work, that is a much better signal.
Latency matters too, but the lowest number is not automatically the best route. A slightly slower exit that stays connected can be more useful than a fast one that keeps dropping. This is why automatic selection should consider route health and available capacity, not only raw ping.
What to try when a VPN stops working in China
- Move from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way around.
- Use the app’s automatic location first. If your account allows manual selection, try another nearby region.
- Check that the phone’s date and time are correct.
- Disable battery restrictions for the VPN app if Android keeps stopping it.
- Restart the app before restarting the whole device.
- Ask support whether there is a current service issue instead of repeatedly reinstalling.
Where OrbitVPN fits
OrbitVPN currently supports 64-bit Android 8+ and 64-bit Windows 10/11. The app can choose among the locations available to the account, show connection and usage information, and keep running in the background. Access is still handled directly rather than through an app store or instant public checkout.
It is a small beta, so I can help with setup and see whether a problem is account-side or server-side. The trade-off is that there is no iPhone or Mac client, no permanent availability promise, and not yet the long public track record of an established commercial VPN. If those things matter more, use a larger provider.
One legal note worth reading
China controls internet access and requires online products and services such as VPNs to be licensed. Rules and enforcement can change. Check current official travel advice and follow local law rather than treating a technical article as legal advice.
